Historical Commission

Mission Statement: The Methuen Historical Commission, the official City agency for preserving and recording the community's history and culture, has maintained the city's archives and museum collection for over a century. The collection represents Methuen's single most important historical repository and contains approximately 10,000 books, documents, records and artifacts pertaining to the history of Methuen and its citizens.

Strengths of the collection include: town records, family records ans account books, business and organization archives, maps and photographs, ephemera, 18th and 19th century farm and domestic tools, portraiture ans items related to Edward F. Searles.

Its mission – to collect, preserve, research and interpret objects and information pertaining to the history of Methuen, and to use these resources to provide educational services for the community. The collection, housed temporarily in the John Hancock Masonic Lodge in central Methuen, is accessible to the public by appointment. Items from the collection are exhibited periodically at the Methuen Historical Society, the Nevins Memorial Library, and other local venues. The Commission generally meets on the third Wednesday of each month.

Historic photographs from the collection can be seen at the Methuen History web site at http://www.methuenhistory.org/photos.htm. The Historical Commission hosts educational programs and outreach events such as walking tours, and develops local history-based curricula for the Methuen schools.
